20 Ways to Make Yourself Feel Young

The old adage is true that you're only as young as you feel. So, I jotted down a few things that you can do to make yourself happy and to make you feel young. Here we go!

1. Keep learning.

Learn something new every day. A study, conducted at the University of Texas, found that new mental activities keep your mind young. It helps the brain retain its youthful health. They also found that it only takes as little as 2 hours of active learning a week to combat the mental decline that’s associated with aging. So take a class or study a book and you will be feeling young in no time.

2. Eat smart.

Learn to cook and make healthy dishes and drinks. Adding foods like fish, almonds, olive oil and avocados for a nutrient packed diet will make you look younger and feel even better. The Dietary Guidelines suggest an eating pattern with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats, and lean proteins.

3. Smile a lot.

A 2016 study included college students, who were asked to categorize digitally simulated faces as either “young” or “old.” The results were clear: Smiling faces were consistently more likely to be categorized as young, and frowning faces as old. So, regardless if it makes you feel younger or not others will notice it.

4. Pray daily.

You will feel at peace when you pray and turn your life over to a higher power. When you love life and you love people you’re body naturally increases endorphins which improves your immune system, helping to keep you healthy and looking younger.

5. Write.

Keeping your mind active by writing improves your memory, boosts self-acknowledgement, releases stress, and develops a positive attitude. Write in a private journal, or write on a blog. All good to keep you feeling younger. Check these out.

6. Travel.

When you’re traveling somewhere new, your brain gets to work making sense of all the new stimuli. This triggers the production of new neural pathways—and the more neural pathways you have, the better your brain performs. The better your brain performs the more active and young you feel.

7. Exercise.

Researchers from the Human Performance Laboratory at Ball State University recently assessed the physical condition of people in their 70s who have been exercising regularly for decades. The researchers suggest that the health measurements of the physically active participants in their 70s look like those of healthy people decades younger. Physical activity is a cornerstone of healthy aging.

8. Get yearly Exams.

While scientists continue to actively research how to slow or prevent age-related declines in physical health, they’ve already discovered multiple ways to improve the chances of maintaining optimal health later in life. Going to the doctor for regular health screenings is essential for healthy aging. A 2021 study found that getting regular check-ups helps doctors catch chronic diseases early and can help patients reduce risk factors for disease.

9. Watch your grand kids.

Kids keep your mindset young by reintroducing you to the wonder in the world. You get to experience everything again through the eyes of a child, which is a wonderful thing! So, do those sleep overs and have fun!

10. Decrease Stress.

Researchers have found that cortisol levels in a person’s body increase steadily after middle-age, and that this age-related increase in stress may drive changes in the brain. The National Institute of Mental Health supports the notion that stress and anxiety rewire the brain in ways that can impact memory, decision-making, and mood. Try yoga or Tia chi for relaxation tips.

11. Value Your Relationships.

Love makes the heart pound, it also makes it stronger. Being in a relationship as it stands alone is great, but when you truly love people it also makes you healthier! Women in relationships with high satisfaction had lower levels of biological risk factors when compared with the other groups. This can be kids or extended family. Cherish those relationships.

12. Walk.

Research has suggested that higher levels of physical activity and cardiovascular fitness could be linked to slower biological aging. It relaxes you and can prolong you're life 5-10 years!

13. Meditate.

Research reveals that easing the mind and body in a relaxing, meditative state on a consistent basis can greatly reduce our age and dramatically affects the production of melatonin and cortisol. This anti-aging agent is an immune-regulator, anti-depressant and antioxidant. It greatly helps to slow cell damage.

14. Get Enough Sleep.

Getting enough sleep helps you stay healthy and alert. Sleep quality matters for memory and mood. Even getting one or two fewer hours of sleep per night on a consistent basis can have long-term damaging effects for our bodies and mind.

15. Make New Friends.

Research shows how important people’s friends are to their happiness. The beautiful, special thing about friendship is that friends are friends because they want to be. It's a choice. Friends make us happy and fun which is always key to feeling young.

16. Laugh.

Researchers studying the process of aging know that laughter improves blood circulation — to the head and to the heart. When we laugh, stress hormone levels are reduced and levels of healthy hormones are increased. The body’s immune system improves with the release of endorphins, those natural ‘feel-good’ chemicals.

17. Get a Pet.

Pet owners are less likely to suffer from depression than those without pets. People with pets have lower blood pressure in stressful situations than those without pets. One study even found that when people with borderline hypertension adopted dogs from a shelter, their blood pressure declined significantly within five months. One of the reasons for these therapeutic effects is that pets fulfill the basic human need for touch.

18. Simplify Your Life.

Studies have shown that a cluttered environment can cause stress and anxiety in people. When you simplify your life, you tend to become more mindful of where your time and attention are going. When you have less stuff to worry about you have more time and energy to value and appreciate what you need to.

19. Take your Vitamins.

It's imperative for you to take your vitamins, minerals, and supplements. As you age you begin to slow the rate at which your essential nutrients are produced or stored. Adding extra to your routine will keep you feeling healthier and younger.
